We are not just our body

In my career, I met thousands of beautiful and honourable people like you and I gained an enormous satisfaction for being able to contribute to their life as an anaesthetist by helping them to have their operation safely and to be well afterwards. Yet, I always felt that, as doctors we need to and we can help them even before they become ill to require serious medical treatment and surgical operations.

I also ask sometimes about their life style and what worries them and what is important to them etc, so that I get to know them better just like previous generation of family doctors used to connect with their patients. As an anaesthetist it is not always practical to do so, specially when urgent anaesthesia is required. But I believe it is very important to understand the whole person for us to treat the body, because the health of the body is constantly influenced by the way we use our mind. The state of the mind is as important as or even more important as a cause of illness than any other factor such as food and exercise.

In medicine, we look at the physical causes only. Physical changes are not the cause but the effect of how we use our mind and body.

Beyond our mind, (I mean by mind is our thoughts) we also have another part to us. That is the part that we are mostly neglecting because of lack of awareness and understanding about it. In spiritual terms you may call it the Soul. But in functional terms  it can be named as our subconscious mind. That is not our thinking mind, but it is our genius or our creative potential and wisdom or higher intelligence. There are many names to that.

We become ill because of many reasons that creates an imbalance in cellular functions. It could be because of certain nutritional deficiencies, or how we use our body and what we expose our body to, including food and drink and environmental factors or how we use our mind.

So, it is important to look at all these aspects of a person to find out where the imbalance is. External causes can be eliminated by clearing our internal causes, because external causes come into contact with us because of the choices we make, so the mind is involved with anything we do, whether it is conscious or subconscious mind.

I have seen over many years that people don't get cured with drugs and surgery unless they also change their way of life, otherwise they only get better temporarily and become ill again with another different illness.

In medical science we learn how the body and the mind are connected and interact with each other. The autonomic nervous system is the gateway between the mind and the body. Every thought creates an impulse to cause a chemical reaction in the body. So, we cannot just treat the body without looking at our thoughts and feelings.

Being mindful of how we feel and think is a new revolution in the way we treat illnesses.
