My job as an anaesthetist is to take care of patients lives while they are under anaesthesia having a surgical operation. It doesn't give my the opportunity or the time to help these people before coming to have surgery. When I see them in the out patient clinic to assess their fitness for anaesthesia I do not have the opportunity to discuss preventative strategies. I am supposed to make them aware that obesity is a risk to having anaesthesia but I am not supposed to do anything about it in the hospital as an anaesthetist, other than canceling or postponing surgery. Thanks to the advances in modern monitoring and skills and training of anaesthetists and our highly skilled surgeons, we are offering surgery and anaesthesia in our hospital to these people of high risk category and they get away without suffering serious complications. But most regional health facilities may not offer surgery to them and we get people with very complex problems transferred from regional facilities.
